Acrylic Roof Waterproofing: How to Apply Al-Madina Roof 200 & Shield Roof 260 (Coverage per m²)

Exposed roofs in Saudi Arabia get extremely hot in summer, and the first heavy rain often reveals leaks and damp patches on the top-floor ceiling. That is why acrylic roof waterproofing has become one of the most popular solutions: it is easy to roll on, white and sun-reflective, and flexible enough to move with the roof. This guide explains when to use it, the difference between Al-Madina Roof 200 and Al-Madina Shield Roof 260, and how much you need per square meter according to the manufacturer’s data sheet.

What is an acrylic roof waterproofing coating?

It is a water-based coating made from a highly flexible acrylic emulsion. Once dry, it forms a seamless membrane that keeps rainwater out while still letting water vapour escape from the concrete, so it does not blister or peel. Its white finish reflects a large share of sunlight, which helps keep the roof and the rooms below cooler.

According to the Al-Madina technical data sheets, Roof 200 and Roof 260 offer:

  • High flexibility that copes with day/night temperature changes.
  • Solar reflectance and a cooling effect.
  • Resistance to water uptake, alkalis, pollution and dirt pick-up.
  • Cold application by roller, brush or spray; non-flammable.
  • Suitable for concrete and cement plaster, indoors and outdoors.

In short: choose Roof 200 for new or sound roofs on a budget, and Shield Roof 260 for roofs fully exposed to sun and rain or with many hairline cracks.

How much roof waterproofing do I need?

The data sheets quote coverage at a 500-micron (0.5 mm) dry film, the recommended thickness for roofs:

  • 100 m² roof with Roof 200: about 100 kg (5 pails of 20 kg).
  • 100 m² roof with Shield Roof 260: 110–130 kg (6–7 pails).

Rough or porous surfaces and spraying increase consumption, so add about 10% extra.

Step-by-step application

1. Prepare the surface

The roof must be clean, dry and free of dust, oil, grease and loose cement. On old roofs, sand flaking areas, wash with water and a suitable detergent, and let it dry completely.

2. Treat cracks and corners

Fill cracks and joints before coating, and embed a fibre mesh tape between coats at parapet corners and around drains, where most leaks start.

3. Primer coat

Dilute the coating with 10% water and apply a first coat that soaks into the concrete pores to improve adhesion.

4. Two finishing coats

After about 5 hours (recoat time at 25 °C), apply two undiluted coats, each at right angles to the previous one, for full coverage.

5. Curing

It is touch-dry in about 2 hours and fully dry in about 24 hours. Keep foot traffic and water off the roof until then.

Conditions: do not apply when the surface is below 10 °C or just before rain. In summer, work early in the morning or late afternoon rather than at midday.

Common mistakes

  • Coating over dust or a flaking old layer.
  • One thick coat instead of two proper coats.
  • Ignoring corners, drains and expansion joints.
  • Diluting more than 10%, which reduces film thickness.
  • Applying on a roof that is still damp.

FAQ

How many coats of acrylic roof coating are needed?

Three: one primer coat diluted 10% with water, then two undiluted coats, as specified in the Roof 200 and Roof 260 data sheets.

How many square meters does a 20 kg pail cover?

Roof 200 covers about 20 m² at 500 µm; Shield Roof 260 covers roughly 15–18 m².

Can I apply it over old tiles?

Yes, after thorough cleaning, light sanding of the tile surface and sealing the joints between tiles.

Does it reduce roof temperature?

Yes. The white finish reflects sunlight, and the data sheet lists a cooling and solar-reflective effect.
